During my time at DAVIDsTEA, I was working long hours, travelling constantly…and not eating very well. Unsurprisingly, my health suffered. I developed sinus issues, ringing in my ears, and I was swallowing constantly. At first, I just chalked it up to stress and kept on rolling. Until I couldn’t ignore it anymore.
During a night of frantic Googling, I discovered Dr. Jamie Koufman – a renowned expert in acid reflux. I was lucky enough to get an appointment with her, and when she took a look at me, she said it was one of the worst cases she’d ever seen. You know when you shock and surprise a specialist, things are pretty bad!
I braced myself for the inevitable: a list of chemicals and medications I was sure I had coming. But Dr. Koufman told me the real problem was my diet: most of my symptoms could be relieved through a radical change in the way I ate. And she was right. I cut out some of my favourite foods – let’s just say I’ll never wash down a slice of pizza with a glass of red wine again – and the difference was remarkable.
Feeling my symptoms improve for the first time in years, I realized just how much power food has over our wellbeing. And while my diet changed, my job didn’t. I was still working long hours and travelling constantly – and I realized just how few options there were for people seeking healthy, nourishing food on the go. That is the moment I knew I wanted to make a difference.
A few years and a lot of hard work later, I launched Mad Radish – a fast-casual restaurant concept serving up nutritious, freshly prepared food that tastes as good as it makes you feel. My dream for Mad Radish is to help give Canadians better access to truly nourishing food.
But that vision extends beyond our customers – before we even opened our doors, we knew we wanted to improve food accessibility for as many people as possible. Which is why I reached out to Community Food Centres Canada to set up a partnership: every time someone places an order through the Mad Radish app, we donate one serving of fresh produce to a low-income community.
Dr. Koufman taught me that food has the power to transform your life. And in her honour, I am dedicating myself to making sure everyone can reap the benefits of a healthy diet.
