Food Hero Stories

A caretaker, teacher, spoiler and gatherer My Food Hero Is...
my grandmother, Marg

Jamie Harling, Restaurants for Change ambassador and Chef at Deane House, writes about his food hero, his grandmother Marg, and why he is supporting Community Food Centres Canada this holiday season.

1.    Who's the food hero in your life?

Marg is my grandmother and she is the food hero in my life. She is multiple characters, fitting into the role of Caretaker, Teacher, Spoiler and Gatherer.

2.    How does she show she cares through food?

Food has always been a big part of who Marg is, whether it's baking your favorite cake on your birthday, making Harling hot sauce, eating egg-in-a-holes in her kitchen, snacking on oatmeal cookies or hosting a large family dinner, my grandmother would always find a way to bring everyone together.

3.    What's your fondest food memory of them?

My fondest food memory of Marg is eating wild blueberry pancakes on my grandparent’s sailboat in Georgian Bay.

4.    Why is it important for you to support an organization that uses food as a tool to increase physical and mental health + community belonging? What about this approach resonates with you?

Food has always been an important part of my life and I have been very fortunate in that it is something I’ve never had to worry about having enough of. There is something inherently special about breaking bread with people, it creates a unique bond and allows you to connect on all sorts of different levels. Food has the ability to bring people together from all different backgrounds and ages and provide a common ground. It lets you put your differences aside and work together. I believe access to healthy, nutritious food is a basic human right and as such, I want to support an organization such as Community Food Centres of Canada, that is trying to ensure that right is given to everyone.
