My food hero is my nonna. When I was about 26 years old, I decided to learn to cook from my Italian grandmother. She was a professional baker and an outstanding cook. Each weekend I'd go visit my nonna and learn something new. Well into her 80s, she still tended her backyard garden for hours each day (it was more like an urban farm, actually) and she'd forever come up with new dishes to keep me coming back.
On one fall day, I was supposed to learn one of her favorite dishes. I drove out to her house in North Toronto, and instead of the usual empty driveway, an ambulance was parked there. She had passed away.
And on the stove was the meal we were supposed to make, “spezzatino,” a kind of delicious Italian stew made of things from her garden. That was one of the saddest days of my life.
Spezzatino became the name of a non-profit food magazine that I started with some close friends. My nonna inspired in me a love for good food and for my community, eventually bringing me to Nick Saul and the amazing folks at Community Food Centres Canada.
